Rob studied early blues and ragtime guitar at the age of twelve. His first experience of playing with another musician was at the age of fourteen and a half with Eric Clapton, (an intriguing story which was broadcast on the BBC Radio programme ‘Teifiside Blues’). At fifteen he started playing the acoustic circuit as a solo artist performing his own compositions, formed various rock, progressive and ‘pop’ based bands’, with his first commercial release on 101 records in 1980.
With various major and independent record companies taking an interest, Rob created the band ‘Papakie’, based around the rhythm section of Phil Capaldi and Dave Nilo, also featuring a selection of guest musicians from various bands including Teardrop Explodes, Culture Club and Sade. A demo album was recorded for Magnet Records, but the tracks were put on the back shelf when Warner Bros acquired the label.
Rob returned to his acoustic 6 & 12 string roots and as a solo artist was offered a recording deal. His first album ‘When the Waters (bring you to me), reached number 4 in the NME instrumental charts receiving critical acclaim in the UK, Canada, North America and Europe. The second album ‘Jacara’ was released ,followed by touring in the UK and Europe, television and radio performances, (including an ‘In Concert Special’ for the BBC and Amnesty International in Athens, Greece).
The third album ‘Dance of the Pharisees’ became the basis for a BBC radio series, a Radio 4 special and a television programme. Not wanting to be categorised as purely a 12 string guitarist, rob created the ‘One Cool Fossil’ project, collaborating with a selection of musicians including John ‘Rabbit’ Bundrick.
Under various pseudonyms, Rob has had a vast selection of commercial albums and tracks released by various companies alongside featured artists including the Dream Team, Craig David, So Solid Crew, Fila Brazillia, Jah Wobble, Nitin Sawhney, Moloko, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Tosca and Rinocerose.
As a freelance composer for film, television, radio and multi–media, he has built up an extensive catalogue of production music tracks for various companies including BMG/Atmospheres, Universal, Sony, Sonoton, Music Sales, BPM and Bosworth Backgrounds, Ded Good Music and Lemoncake. Rob also works as a Producer for various bands and artists.
